Good to know

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a ticket for Prague Castle?

The grounds and courtyards are free to walk through; you need a ticket for the interiors. Circuits A and B cover St Vitus Cathedral, the Old Royal Palace, St George’s Basilica and the Golden Lane, circuit C the Treasury and the Picture Gallery. Tickets are usually valid for two days, and booking ahead saves you the queue at the ticket office.

Do I need a ticket to see the astronomical clock?

No. The hourly show of the apostles runs from 9:00 to 23:00 and can be watched for free from Old Town Square. A ticket is only needed for the Old Town Hall tower, which gives you the view over the square.

Which Vltava cruise should I choose?

It depends on what you want. The short sightseeing cruises of about an hour show you the Charles Bridge and the castle from the water; dinner cruises take around three hours and add buffet and live music. Cheap listings rarely include food, so compare the included items rather than the price alone.

How long do the day trips from Prague really take?

Kutná Hora is about an hour by train, Terezín about an hour by bus, Karlovy Vary around two hours, and Český Krumlov roughly three hours each way. A tour makes most sense where public transport is slow, as for Český Krumlov or Saxon Switzerland; Kutná Hora and Karlštejn are easy to do yourself.

Is a city pass worth it?

Only if you really visit several of the included attractions and use the public transport it covers. Add up the entries you actually want, compare the total with the pass price, and remember that the castle and the Old Town are free to walk around.

Are there tours in languages other than English?

Yes. Many walking tours and castle tours are offered in German, Spanish or French as well, and some in other languages. The language is stated on the booking page – check it before you pay, because the same route is often sold in several language versions as separate listings.
